The Soho House

Harmonising the Soho House App.
Translating iOS experience to native Android.

OVERVIEW

Soho House needed to bring its Android experience up to the level of its iOS app. The existing Android build was outdated, inconsistent and missing key features — resulting in an experience that didn’t match the brand’s standards or its members’ expectations.

I was brought in to modernise the Android app, translate the iOS experience into a native Android design, and create a cohesive foundation that would enable the team to scale both platforms consistently going forward.

PROBLEM

The Android app fell behind the iOS experience — with inconsistent UI and missing features — leading to a fragmented experience for members. How might we translate the iOS experience into a native, cohesive Android app that feels consistent with the brand?

IMPACT
  • Delivered a fully native Android design system, aligning iOS and Android experiences to ensure brand consistency across platforms.

  • Unlocked 100% of core features for Android users that were previously exclusive to iOS - improving parity across the member experience.

  • Established a scalable UI framework that enables Soho House to maintain, evolve and expand its digital presence beyond iOS.

FRAMEWORK

Audit & gaps
I reviewed the full iOS experience to pinpoint what Android was missing — features, interactions and components needing adaptation.

Native translation
Rather than copy iOS, I rebuilt the UI using Material Design patterns, keeping the brand while making the app feel truly Android.

Systematised foundation
I defined clear component behaviours, hierarchy, spacing, elevation and navigation to create a cohesive Android structure.

Platform alignment
This groundwork enabled future features to be designed and built in parallel across iOS and Android, ensuring consistency and scalability.

TOOLKIT

Building a cohesive Android toolkit

To support a scalable rollout, I created a dedicated Android UI toolkit that translated the Soho House experience into clear, reusable components and patterns. This enabled designers and engineers - both internal teams and partners - to build new screens consistently, speed up delivery, and maintain parity with iOS without reinventing the basics each time.

OUTCOME

The new approach helped align the product and engineering teams, brought the Android experience closer to iOS, and made the overall product more consistent across platforms, resulting in a clear and scalable direction for Soho House’s Android app.

✔️ The opportunity for the users to enjoy the features that so far were only offered for iOS clients is now fully available for everyone who uses the Soho House App, no matter what device they use.

✔️ Expansion of the Soho House brand experience, conquering new digital platforms.

✔️ The redesigned app also introduced a small Android design system, which made handoff easier, improved collaboration, and helped the team move faster when building new features.

KEY LEARNINGS

Translating the iOS experience to Android meant rethinking patterns — not copying them — to ensure the product felt native and intuitive. Establishing a clear design system, accelerated alignment, reduced ambiguity and enabled engineering to move faster. Working within existing brand and product constraints pushed smart prioritisation, keeping the work focused on what truly improved the member experience. Throughout the process, close collaboration with product and engineering was key to making faster decisions and uncovering edge cases.
